Staff

Our coaches have been carefully recruited in order to provide our players with the best possible learning experience. All of our coaches are licenced and upheld to a written contract outlining the Carolina Velocity expectations. We pool coaches from the US, Europe and the rest of the world to give a multinational coaching experience to our players.

Director of Soccer, Andy Thompson, brings with him an impressive track record off layer development both in England and in North Carolina. Andy has progressed players into both the professional and the collegiate setup. He holds the UEFA B Licence, NSCAA National, Advanced and Premier Diplomas.

He is highly respected within the game, having a professional network which can only bring true quality to Carolina Velocity FC. His ability to lead, educate and manage coaches enables Velocity to have some of the most qualified and experienced coaches in North Carolina.

Andy joins Carolina Velocity as the Director of Soccer. Andy brings with him an impressive track record of player development both in England and North Carolina.

​Conor joins Carolina Velocity with a wealth of playing and coaching experience both in England and in the US. He will serve as Technical Director of Carolina Velocity. Conor learned his trade in a professional environment at Portsmouth - who were then in the Premier League - where he worked with international-level coaches and players.

​After playing, Conor studied for his UEFA B Licence and worked for the Portsmouth FC Academy for a number of years, being appointed manager of their U15 squad. Conor has worked closely with Velocity Director of Soccer, Andy Thompson, for a number of years, holding roles with Premier UK Soccer and partner club SCS Clinton United; where he served as Academy Director.

Barrie joins Carolina Velocity with a wealth of playing and coaching experience in the United Kingdom and the US. A former Watford FC and Arsenal FC youth player, Barrie he received professional coaching from ex professional players and A license coaches. 

After spending 6 years at Arsenal he moved on to start playing Semi-Pro soccer for Stevenage FC. He then moved to Ware FC as player to continue his semi-pro career and coached the reserves and youth teams at the club.  He then started work as a full time sports coach and completed his Level 3, UEFA B soccer coaching license in 2011.  He continued to play semi-pro soccer and coached a number of Academy, reserve, adult 1st team and female players and teams.

Barrie has worked for a number of years in the United States following his retirement from playing, having worked closely with Andy Thompson as a the Premier UK Elite Boys Director of Coaching. Prior to joining Carolina Velocity, he was the Director of Coaching at North Carolina United Soccer Club. He holds the NSCAA National diploma.

​Coach Scotty is Carolina Velocity's Academy Director, overseeing our stars of tomorrow across all three Academy locations.

From 8 until 18, Scotty played for top youth and reserve teams including Newcastle United, Middlesbrough, Celtic, Darlington and Carlisle United. Scotty attended university in the United States at Wingate University in Wingate NC. He captained the Bulldogs to a Division II National Championship in 2016, making three NCAA tournament appearances as well as two first-team appearances on the All Conference team.

Scotty then transferred to Chowan University, leading them to their winningest year before graduating in May 2018 with his degree in Exercise Science.

He then moved into coaching, working with Velocity Director of Soccer Andy Thompson at Premier UK Soccer before taking up his current role as Academy Director at Carolina Velocity FC.

Amobi Agu has a lifetime of involvement in soccer both as a player and youth soccer coach. As the owner of CEDA Academy, Amobi has earned a reputation as one of the premier technical soccer trainers in the Triangle.

He has been personally involved in the development of more than 15 US Soccer Development Academy players and countless other players who have enjoyed success at the regional, national and international levels.

JAMES SMITH

James joins Carolina Velocity following an impressive playing and coaching career in college. As an undergrad at Lees-McRae, James was a 3 year starter and eventual captain. During his time there, he earned All-Conference, Region and State selections. 

As a post grad, James played for Div I East Tennessee, where he became Assistant Coach following completion of his Masters Degree, helping guide them to an NCAA playoff appearance. Most recently James has been assistant coach at Lander University, coaching one of the top Division II Men's team in the Country. James also played for Brighton & Hove Albion between the ages of 8-19.

LUKE WILLIAMS

Luke joins us as Assistant Coach. Luke played for Swindon Town Academy in England. He furthered his education and soccer career playing Division 1 collegiate soccer at Elon University in North Carolina. Luke made Conference Team all 4 years at Elon, captained 2 years and was awarded for Sportsmanship in 2019. Luke graduated in December 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management and minor in Business Administration.

Eric joins us as Assistant Coach. A talented player, he played youth soccer in his native Spain for Europe's most successful club, Real Madrid CF, before moving on to Alcobendas CF. Eric then moved to the US to continue his career at Shaw University in Raleigh, NC, while studying for his degree in psychology and criminology. Eric is fluent in English, Spanish and German.
